In the age of multiple equity movements, it is critical to explore an unspoken nuance--the silencing of women leaders. Carrie Lynn Arnold calls attention to the history and complex dynamics that can suppress a leader’s voice while offering solutions for change.
As a feminist rhetorician who has long worked at the intersection of silence and listening, I'm delighted with Arnold's study of women, silence/silencing, and leadership. For me, hers is an important cross-over book, one that beautifully transports academic research into workplace understandings--and applications! - Cheryl Glenn, PhD, University Distinguished Professor of English, Penn State University, author of "Rhetorical Feminism and This Thing Called Hope"

I have a mentor that I talk to every 2 weeks. Four weeks ago, she shared with me that she had a new book she was reading. She dared me to read it. That I might find it very emotional or painful at times. I took the dare and I could not put it down. I anticipated that at the 2/3 mark – many books run out of steam. But Sidelined and Silenced was riveting to the very end. I went back and re-read a couple of sections and had conversations with friends and daughters that I am recommending it to.
I found the book enlightening, empowering and it uncovered so many stories that I have buried. I found myself reading, taking notes going back and reading again. I recognized myself, my sisters, my mother and grandmother. I also recognized men in my life. Some were silencers. And some are my strongest allies. But mostly I recognized the many people that I work with everyday that have lost their voices. - D.F.S. Career Coach
Dr. Arnold hit the nail on the head! She has captured the challenges and struggles many women and some men, for that matter, have experienced with being silenced and sidelined. It is a must read for organizational leaders who want to lead a cultural shift in how we do business, promote, and support leaders, specifically women leaders. I also enjoyed how the author gave us a peek into her personal world. Well done! - A.H. PhD
This book could not have been released at a better time! Our current social issue backdrop has called attention to the need for better and more individualized approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The testimonies and the gems of this book couldn’t have come to me or us at a better time in history. It is Silenced and Sidelined : How Women Leaders find their voices and break barriers by Carrie Arnold, PhD, MCC. It is the perfect time to practice elevating our self awareness to the dominant discourse surrounding us daily so that we may protect our own voices. Throughout your journey of navigating pitch meetings, cross functional collaboration, corporate boardrooms and executive interviews...what has the been the impact of the dominant discourse on your voice? This book speaks to all women. The focus is work and corporate leadership. Many women are leaders in other areas of their lives and have been silenced there as well. An important book and awesome read that brought back moments and periods of time for me. Carrie saved the best for last and it makes a great read all the way to the last page! I was taking notes and highly recommend! D.S. Leadership Development Coach
